           What is Project CARE?

Project CARE (Community Action Readiness Effort) combines the efforts of various local government, military, Chamber and community organizations to provide:

  1. Assistance to families of deployed military personnel;
  2. Assistance to local businesses that may suffer because of large-scale deployments; and
  3. A means of boosting community spirit through appreciation events and other activities during the difficult times that may face our military community.

Conceived after a large and hard-hitting deployment of local troops in the first Gulf War, Project CARE was fully activated on January 17, 2003, for Operation Iraqi Freedom and continues to provide assistance for military and community needs.

Jacksonville-Onslow County community's tradition of supporting our troops from Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River. In sponsoring and coordinating efforts to assist the families of deployed service members, Project CARE exemplifies the very best elements of our community. Since its activation, Project CARE's approach has been adopted by military communities throughout the nation. It has generated support from many sources and was named as a beneficiary of the inaugural Marine Corps Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament, part of the nationwide Celebrity Players Tour (CPT). Funds generated from this CPT event and received from other sources have been used to establish a Project CARE Endowment.

This fund, managed by the North Carolina Community Foundation, will be used to provide assistance to military families on an ongoing basis during times of deployment.

We are proud and grateful to be a part of the Jacksonville-Onslow County community tradition of supporting our troops and their families. Since its adoption, Project CARE's approach has been adopted by military communities throughout the nation.
